Dorset » Bridport accommodation

Originally the country's number one rope manufacturer, Bridport is an attractive market town with a fishing harbour nearby at West Bay. Rope making was the town's main source of income all the way back to King John's times, when local rope was made for both the navy and the army, long before becoming a global business. Of the many old buildings in Bridport's main streets, many were used for rope making, such as the West Mill and Court.

Twice a week, this runner-up for the South West Local Food Award town features street markets, while the museum has a broad display on local history, with a particular accent on its most traditional industry.

Bridport has two forts worth exploring: Eggardon Hill Fort, built in the Iron Age and spanning over forty hill top acres, offering some amazing views in a dramatic scenery, with nice facilities; and Pilsdon Pen, from the same time period and located at over 900 feet.

Mangerton Mill, right by the River Manger, is not only a working water mill, but also a tea room and a Museum of Rural Bygones. It's also possible to fish for trout in this river. Close by is Palmers Thatched Brewery, where you can tour the facilities and then have a taste of the goods.

Great as a base for exploring Dorset, Bridport has numerous restaurants, cafés and shops.
